WASHINGTON — Engineers and pilots continue to struggle with operating F-35 jets in low-light conditions, creating a new challenge to obscure the pilot's horizon during night flights with below-average starlight. According to documents obtained exclusively by Defense News.

By affecting the feed of the night vision camera, this problem appears to the pilot as an unstable horizon or streak on the night vision screen, obscuring the horizon.

"During shore testing in cloudy starlight, with the [helmet-mounted display] symbol brightness and video contrast at maximum settings, pilots could rely on video brightness adjustments at any time. We were unable to create a horizon image that could be used to display the scene with texture, which is important for peripheral motion cues. ," the government document said.
Fixing the bug, first reported in November 2017, is a top priority for the Marine Corps, according to the document. The issue is listed in the documentation as a Category 1 bug, defined as "significantly limiting the combat readiness of the organization using it." On this scale, category 1 represents the most serious type of defect.
This issue is separate from concerns about the "green glow" of LED lights on a helmet-mounted display. This can interfere with the pilot's view of the carrier's deck lights during night landings at sea in very low light.
The document also lists the glow problem as a category 1 defect. But while that's a separate problem, Lockheed Martin executives in a statement pointed to a common solution to both low-light problems: the advanced III generation F-35 helmet currently in service.

"Advanced third-generation helmets have already been designed, tested and are now certified for use," said Greg Ulmer, general manager of Lockheed Martin's F-35 program. Defense News submitted written inquiries about these and other deficiencies to the Defense Department's F-35 Program Office, but it had not responded as of press time, despite several months of follow-up.
